THE WORD OF ARTIST:
Terry Haffner -
Artist and Inspirational Speaker
Terry Haffner knew art would play a
significant role in his life and specifically painting would consume
many waking hours. A trip to an art show had Terry in awe of numerous
landscapes/seascapes artists who painted in Plein Aire and
impressionistic style. Terry would choose acrylics and settle on
painting landscapes and seascapes.
Left at birth with no arms and partial
legs has given Terry power throughout his life to reflect on the more in
life. As an artist, Terry will add new spectrum of color to your world.
Your emotions will be touched, guaranteed. As a speaker Terry will
motivate, inspire, and challenge your audience. In churches, convention
halls and schools, Terry's message from his heart will reach your soul.
"Achievement and Attempt work together. There is no way to achieve
something without and attempt, and you can't attempt something without
some type of achievement. This is why we must all work together in
order to allow ourselves to make better attempts so our achievements can
be even sweeter." ~ Neil Kelty

Do You Have a Future in Photography? by Colin Hartness
http://www.asaphotography.com

There is a wide world of photography. It touches each of us in our
lives on a daily basis in some form or another. Photography is so much a
part of our culture now that we hardly even notice all the places that
it exists. When you watch television, look at a magazine or even view a
billboard on the highway, this is all because of photography. There are
so many ways that photography crosses our lives each day. There are a
lot of opportunities for someone looking for photography jobs.
- What Photography Jobs are
Available?
If you enjoy photography and are thinking of it as a
career, there are actually many different directions you can choose
from. Obviously, there is professional photography but even in that
choice there are many other smaller options that you have as well.
You can become a photographer in a special field such as wedding or
family photographer. You can choose to make money taking pictures of
things you love such as animals, nature or ships. If you enjoy scuba
diving, you can become an underwater photographer. Pretty much anything
you can think of, there is room to take and sell pictures of it. If you
love taking pictures and the idea of a career in photography sounds good
to you, just how do you begin finding photography jobs?
- How Do You Find Photography
Jobs?
There are different ways of finding photography jobs,
depending on the type of job you are looking for and your experience.
You can begin by creating a resume and portfolio of your work. Then you
can search on the internet at freelance photography job boards or
photography websites and message boards. Get specific into types of
photographing you have done and look on the internet for those.
You can go locally and look for internships or local
firms or companies that may need photographers. You can get the word out
by doing small events such as birthday parties and such. Get your name
out as someone who will work these functions. Show friends and family
samples of your work and ask them to spread the word. You may even want
to participate in a charitable or non-profit event to boost your
portfolio.
You can also begin submitting your work to contests and
magazines to get yourself known and build your portfolio. Placing
or winning in contests and getting published in magazines can help you
build clips that you can use for getting bigger and better jobs.
Lastly, you can actually apply to jobs directly. It is
best to do this only if you have the proper qualifications for the job.
You don’t want to set your goals so high that you get let down but there
is nothing wrong with going for what you want. Most importantly, get as
involved with what you love as possible. Learn as much as you can about
photography and what makes good photography. Subscribe to
magazines, read books, look at winners of photography contests.

The Gates, Central Park, 1979-2005
by
Vincent Seeno
www.empirewallart.com

On February 12, 2005, “The
Gates, Central Park, 1979-2005” was unveiled in New York City’s Central
Park. This creation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude was more than 25 years
in the making. Although scaled down from its original design, “The
Gates” features 7,500 16-foot-high vinyl gates lining the park's paths
with saffron-colored fabric panels hanging above those walking through.
The gates line 23 miles of pedestrian paths including the wilder, more
natural north end. Guided trolley and walking tours are offered, and
the Metropolitan Museum opened its roof to visitors for the first time
during the winter. From an aerial view, “The Gates” looks like an
orange river snaked through the park’s vast greenery.
The
event has drawn worldwide public attention and has reinforced the
importance of the classic park as an iconic location important to urban
history and landscape architecture. It has brought excitement to many
of the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and other visitors who have
come to see it. The fact that it has sharply increased park visitation
during the dog days of winter is a testament to its lure and
appreciation. Although this historic event is intended to provide a
memorable and exhilarating experience, some have questioned, is it art?
According to wikipedia.org, the word “art” usually refers to the visual
arts, but the concept of what art is has continuously changed over
centuries. Perhaps the most concise definition is its broadest: art
refers to all creative human endeavors, excluding actions directly
related to survival and reproduction. From a wide perspective, art is
simply a generic term for any product of the creative impulse.
According to this definition, “The Gates” is indeed art. However, some
believe that art is equivalent to what is exhibited at the Metropolitan
Museum, the Louvre, or other great museums, and is not something that
simply alters a landscape. Art can be very subjective, and like beauty,
it’s in the eye of the beholder. What is beautiful (or considered art)
to some may not be perceived so by others. Whichever category you fall
into, it is hard to ignore what a monumental attraction “The Gates” has
become.
The
person that ultimately made “The Gates” possible was Mayor Michael
Bloomberg, a longtime art aficionado who collects and admires Christo’s
work. The project withstood further opposition because the artists
funded the entire project, thought to be $21 million including security
and cleanup. The artists also bought 1 million swatches of the
project's signature orange fabric. Upon request, project monitors give
visitors complimentary 2.75-by-2.75-inch souvenir swatches. In addition
to the artists’ funding, the event provided employment for thousands of
New York City residents
The
temporary work of “art” will remain in place through February 27, after
which it will be disassembled and the materials recycled. “The Gates”
will leave a lasting impression on the city of New York and the world
thanks to the perseverance of these artists and their passion for this
breathtaking array of public “art.” Christo, an American from Bulgaria,
and Jeanne-Claude, a Parisian born in Casablanca, were both born on June
13, 1935. They met in Paris and now reside in New York.
