ART EXHIBIT PRESS RELEASE:  Anatomically Correct

Anatomically Correct, a non-profit visual arts organization, has put together an exhibition of paintings, drawings and photographs of Chicago area theaters – both past and present - by Chicago artists Don Elmi, Bart Harris, Barbara Herring, and Debra Paulson, as well as suburban artists Howard Jacobs (from Highland Park, IL), and Jack Siegel (from Deerfield, IL).

The exhibition will be on display beginning September 10, 2007 through November 11, 2007 in the Apollo Theater at 2540 North Lincoln Ave in Chicago. There will be a free reception and opportunity to meet the artists on Friday, October 5, 2007 (5:30 – 7:30 pm).

The exhibition "All the World's a Stage", takes a historical look at Chicago area theaters - both past and present - and explores their theatrical journey from vaudeville stages, through silent pictures to talking motion pictures and full circle back to live performances once again.

Also included in the exhibition is educational background on each of the theaters.

Chicago artist Don Elmi's period paintings of Chicago's Uptown, Esquire, Nortown, and Chicago Theatres, in addition to the Coronado in Rockford, IL capture the nostalgic days of vaudeville and Chicago's old trolley cars.

Bart Harris' photos of the current day Auditorium and Fine Arts Building are a contrast to the period pieces on display.

Highland Park, IL artist Howard Jacobs (now 82) has created a drawing of the original Palace (now the Cadillac Palace) from his childhood memory of the theater.

Deerfield, IL artist Jack Siegel has created a period painting of The Century theater (formerly The Diversey) in Chicago. Jack remarks, "I went to the Century in 1951 for the first time. I was overwhelmed by the enormity of the space, the height of the ceiling  and the grandiosity of the decorations.   It was typical of so many of the Balaban and Katz movie palaces."

The Rialto Square Theater in Joliet, IL is also featured in the exhibition. Painter Barbara Herring (Chicago, IL) and photographer Debra Paulson (Chicago, IL) are part of a group of artists known as the Plein Air Painters of Chicago whose group was invited inside the Rialto in early May 2007 to create their artwork. (The phrase en plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air" and is used to describe the act of painting in the outside environment, rather than indoors such as in a studio.)   Barbara reflects, "What was striking was the extensive renovation effort the city undertook to keep this gem.   It was quite something [to paint there] and lots of fun."

Anatomically Correct's Executive Director Debra Hatchett has a personal attachment to the Rialto. "I grew up in Joliet and as a kid remember seeing live performances and later movies in the theater. I even performed on the Rialto stage. By then the theater was falling apart and local talent was invited to perform at the theater – variety hour style. My most vivid memory was of the dressing room back stage. The ceiling was leaking and water was pouring down the cracked plaster wall over the lights above the shattered make-up mirror. It somehow seemed like the building was crying."

The underlying message of this art exhibition is preservation. Debra continues "I studied piano for several years under Dorothy Mavrich who was instrumental in getting the theater restored to its current glory. Ms. Mavrich devoted many years to her "Save the Rialto" campaign and got the entire community involved. She is a true inspiration!"

Debra was also inspired by the Plein Air Painters of Chicago trip to the Rialto and hopes to organize similar events in Chicago theaters with local artists.   The work they create as part of the "Paint a Theater" project will be added to this traveling exhibition. "This exhibition stirs up viewers fond memories of their favorite theaters.   It is overwhelmingly sad to see how many historical theaters we have lost," remarks Debra Hatchett.

Artists are interested in participating in the "Paint a Theater" project should phone Anatomically Correct at 312-514-1802 or go to their website www.anatomicallycorrect.org for more information.

Images of the artwork on display and detailed historical information on each of the theaters can be viewed on the website as well.

Founded in 1991, Anatomically Correct is a non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing works by artists in alternative spaces in a combined effort to educate, diversify, and promote community awareness of the visual and performing arts.

Meeting Place ARTS INSTITUTE AT BOURNEMOUTH RATES AS ONE OF THE TOP SPECIALISTS IN NATIONAL STUDENT SURVEY:  The Arts Institute at Bournemouth has once again confirmed its status as one of the top specialist HEIs in the UK, showing excellent results in the newly published 2007 National Student Survey (NSS).  144 HEIs were included in this year's survey.  Student satisfaction scored particularly highly, putting the Institute into an impressive second place of the twelve Arts, Design & Media specialists, further improving on its overall rating in the 2006 survey and showing higher scores than last year in many set questions.

84% of Institute students were satisfied with the quality of their course and 77% were satisfied with the assessment and feedback given to them by teaching staff (the fourth highest score of all HEIs in the survey).   The Institute also ranked in the top 20 overall in a number of other areas: personal development (13th); learning resources (14th); academic support (17th); and teaching (18th).

John Last, Deputy Principal, commented “We are once again delighted by the results of this important student survey; they reflect the continued commitment shown by our academic and indeed all Institute staff.  We strive to provide a specialist learning experience of the highest quality and real relevance to students wishing to enter the creative industries and these results are evidence to this commitment”.

The excellent results of this survey follow the continued success of the Institute’s annual application figures, which showed an overall increase of 15.5% of Home and EU applicants on last year.

The results of the survey will be made available online at www.unistats.ac.uk  For more information on the Arts Institute at Bournemouth, please visit www.aib.ac.uk
